"Sigh. It was so much simpler when all valid input was 7-bit ASCII." Sigh. It was so much easier when we all spoke English.
I will spend a lot of time complaining about the complexity of modern computer systems, and Unicode, in its efforts to be thorough, is more complex and bloated than it needs to be. But "just-use-ascii" is the easiest possible example of oversimplification. Most of the world uses a language that requires more than ASCII. Sorry. (Disclaimer, I have no fricking idea how prevalent or good Romanization of other languages is.)
